About Me

Steve Gowin produces corporate video in San Francisco.

Why do you write?

Something means me to write whether that's for better or for worse.

Lately what fuels creativity seem to be snatches of ideas that in the beginning seem ordinary and mundane but take on some little particularity through the process of writing. I believe any art in my writing is often the result of exploration of writing's craft...

But even more recently I've realized that the writing's only good when somehow you get to a deeper truer place, whether that's through humor or drama or narrative or characterization or language... but hopefully through all of it.

In the end though, it's touching that deep true place that makes the writing worthy.

Any favorite authors? Books?

Flannery O'Connor
Cormac McCarthy
Barbara Kingsolver
Joseph Conrad
Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Jorge Luis Borges
Melville,
Charles Portis...

and filmmakers
Robert Altman
WC Fields
Jean Renoir
John Huston
Werner Herzog
Errol Morris...

McCabe and Mrs. Miller is the best film ever made. Unforgiven is a close second, followed by Grand Illusion. No Country for Old Men should be seen with There Will be Blood and Unforgiven on a triple feature... every day.

Seems I'm a bit late to the party here at Fictionaut, Steven. I've been waiting quite some time for an invitation and it finally arrived. Anyway, reading stories like "Daddy Walked the Pits" is a big part of what inspires me to write. I look forward to reading the rest of your fiction/poetry. Also, thanks for the comment on "Parade," as well as the fav.

I have actually watched "Plan 9 from Outer Space". Poor Bela- died before the shoot was done. I understand that's where the the ape in a space helmet came from. Loved the Johnny Depp portrayal. Thanks for reading "I'm Waiting"- the encouragement means a great deal to me.

Sara Fitzpatrick Comito – Feb 22, 2013

Steve, it's a real treat to see your comment at "Listing." I get the idea you do know something about poetry. I guess the most important thing is that it moves you. And if mine did, then that makes my day. Thank you.

Mathew Paust – Jan 27, 2013

Steven, I didn't give it a helluva lotta thought. It just sorta squirted out. Glad you liked it. I didn't add that while we waited by the stage door Bob Denver rode up on a bicycle and escorted us to the set. Friendly, humble, seemed like an old friend.

Barry Basden – Jan 17, 2013

Thanks, Steven, for your comments on Aerospace. "Rosie's Back!" was the banner on a small cement block bldg. Inside Rosie and the Screamers, including her brother--a goth-looking cadaver on lead guitar--pounded out Rolling Stones covers...the joint was rocking...

Isabell Serafin – Jan 12, 2013

Gloria Garfunkel – Jan 05, 2013

You broke into a smile?

Gloria Garfunkel – Jan 04, 2013

It is funny in an absurd way, not being able to concentrate on TV, the lowest of the lows.

Mathew Paust – Jan 03, 2013

Steve, I appreciate that you got so much out of my flash piece "The Crack". It's funny, I've been remembering it periodically all of my adult life and only just then, when I wrote it, did the Freudian implications occur to me. I was too young then to know anything about vaginas or their significance - I think. I have the flying dreams occasionally, too, but always find them exhilarating as they represent a triumph of sorts or an escape for me.

Barry Basden – Jan 03, 2013

Thanks, Steven, for commenting on White Cliffs. "Cinematic" means a lot, and something I most often strive for.

Gloria Garfunkel – Jan 02, 2013

So much kindness and empathy in your Chrysalis comment, means so very much to me. I never even thought of that. The loneliness of bipolar, where you are always on a different plane than everyone else. Thank you for that gift.

Gloria Garfunkel – Jan 02, 2013

Hi Steven,
Thank you so much for taking the time to ride along with me for a little while on my madcap journey into satire and farce and for leaving a comment. I appreciate your company as I digress into silliness. Ready or not, there's more to come. The Woman in the Wet Raincoat and much much more. It's all in fun! I am looking forward to reading your work, so I'll be back!
