Manifest Destiny
by Gary Hardaway
It manifests in genocide and the slave trade,
in Jim Crow and the ruthlessness
of capital in the camps of labor,
and in the Klan and contemporary Republicanism;
It manifests in the narratives of market and in
indentured servitude of the twenty-first century.
Will it take the rise
of cyber guerillas to finish it
in the way it should be finished
as impartial seas rise to fill thirsty streets
with water that cannot slake but only drown?
Haunting and heartbreaking. *
What Emily said.*
The start of an anthem. Need Bob Dylan to put a tune to it. *
Sad and real *
I like both pf these in the same phrase:
"and in the Klan and contemporary Republicanism."
Seems about right.
Thoughtful poem, Gary. *
Thank you, Emily,
and Amanda,
and Matt,
and John,
and Steve,
and Kathy.
It just keeps manifesting, doesn't it?*
"as impartial seas rise to fill thirsty streets
with water that cannot slake but only drown"
*
impartial seas rise to fill thirsty streets
with water that cannot slake but only drown?
Thanks, Gary and Sam.
