God I hate you
go ahead
stick one more morsel
into that piehole
God you're ugly
sitting there inert
you haven't done
one fucking thing all day
God you're stupid
thinking you could beat it
You're looking pretty beat down
to me.
Maybe there's a dumber
uglier
fatter
more wretched bitch in this world than you
but I don't know where.
You make me sick you really do.
Somebody ought to put you out of your misery.
Loser.

In 2010, Portia de Rossi published her book, Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain. I caught her on a talk show discussing the book and reading excerpts, and was stunned by how closely this poem, which I had already written, paralleled her words. It made me realize that we are all in this self-critical, self-loathing hot tub together; even the most beautiful and talented among us are subject to these prevalent and irrational thoughts.
Brutal. I hear the voice of a 13-year old girl in this. Well done.
Powerful. I might change the title to I Hate You vs. the cloying 'Despair' which is already inherent.
A huge fuck yes to this. *
Name changed per Lucinda's suggestion. Thanks Everyone for the comments. Laura
Oooooo this is so nasty. I do not like the narrator, but I love the energy here and the voice is terrific.
Nice, Laura.
