Soon, ordinary people will die,
broken by the fall through remnants
of a safety net. They will be
presented as expendable, lazy,
poor, no longer entitled,
a drag on polite society.
Polite society will cheer
as another body is discovered
and disposed of. The cheers
will drown out the gasps
of sorrow and outrage.
At some point, indifference
will swallow the small gasps.
The appalling will become the norm.
Chilling in its real moment, Gary. Especially like these lines:
"At some point, indifference / will swallow the small gasps." *
Thank you, Sam.

Thank you, Steve.
"The appalling will become the norm." You nailed it Gary, it's already been happening.
Thank you, Paul.
Every now and again this grim scenario, which you've captured so chillingly well, chills my heart, as well. ***
Thank you, Matt.
What Paul said. Chilling, Gary.
Thank you, Kitty.
Very nice. Deleting the last line would give it more punch for me. Although the last line would make a good title for the poem.

Wow, Gary. You are expressing my own deep worries and in a haunting way.
Thank you, Adam.
Thank you Gary.
Thank you, Gay.
Add the word bacon in there somewhere, and it would become more poignant. Nice work, unveiling the eclipse.
Thank you. bacon
What Paul said. We're already in the volcano.
Thank you, Barry.
* I understand "bleeding hearts," these days. I have one. Excellent, Gary.
Thank you, Nonnie.
