I'm a diamond mine, not sure if I'll ever have the time and energy to liberate all the best stones and match them with their best settings. But I will try!
Check out my Glass Woman Prize page on www.sigriddaughter.com. It's in its Eleventh award cycle now. Twice a year I give 10% of my personal income as prizes to passionate women prose writers.
I write because I am a woman and I feel women's voices are important. My voice feels small at times, especially compared with what I want to express, but maybe dissatisfaction is what keeps any of us reaching for the stars.
I still want to change the world after all these (58) years--or should I say after all these past 5000 years?--and words happen to be my favorite tool.
One day I hope to have a respectable language of joy (it seems sorrow and such are always more respectable and I want to rebel against that, but haven't been overly successful to date), and a tool for having beauty and love triumph over violence and fear and ugliness. Wish me luck!
Marilyn French, Doris Lessing, Mary Oliver, Elizabeth George, Anais Nin, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, The Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, Josephine Siebe, Karl May, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Simone de Beauvoir, Susan Griffin, Ursula K. le Guin, Barbara Walker and William Blake are and/or have been some of the folks who make my heart beat faster.
My favorite book for the last 25 years or so has been Doris Lessing's The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five. Before then it was fairytales and mythology of many kinds.
Thanks so much for your kind words on Drought.

Beate, thanks for commenting and faving "Testimony." I'm delighted you enjoyed it.
Thanks, Beate, for your kind comment on Lemony Snickers. The prompt for that came from John Riley's nostalgic boyhood piece, "Testimony", further down the feed. This place is becoming a cyberpsychiatrist's couch for me, nudging my memory further back than I'd ever considered possible.
Beate, thanks much for jumping into the middle of Hemingway Test and for your kind remarks. I try to write each chapter to be enjoyable by itself without depending on what came before.
Thanks for your sad comment on Conversation.
Amuses me now to wonder what might have happened had my mom or dad found the notes, figured out where they'd come from and pushed answers up through the crack. I spent a lot of time in the basement and never found any of my notes, altho my curiosity never strayed beyond looking down at the crack from above.
Beate, thanks for your comments on my flash piece "The Crack". I suspect the notes either drifted down to the basement or landed in some small space between floor boards and the rafters. It never occurred to me to look up in the basement and try to find the crack there.
Thanks, Beate. I'm glad White Cliffs touched you.

Thanks kindly Beate, about Blemish in the Blood!
Thank you for reading Sudden Melancholy and for commenting. I love the poem "Pine Siskin," that you submitted to The Linnet's Wings. As poetry editor there, I chose it for the winter issue, but I have to give the other editors a chance to yay or nay. They always seem to agree with me, so I'm sure you'll be getting an "official" acceptance letter soon. Cheers, Nonnie
Thanks so much for the fave and lovely comment on "Neruda's Answer."
Re: Hair. Being an outsider can be painful but has its advantages in terms of insight.

Your werewolf comment made me laugh.
About the Anne Frank series: believe with all my soul that the only way to fully heal this doomed planet is to look the absolute horror of what has gone on in the face and feel our full hatred and rage and transform the energy into compassion, healing and reparation of the world. If we ignore it, we are doomed.
Beate, a delayed thank you for commenting on my story "Honor Grade." I'm happy you enjoyed it.
Hello Beate! I just wanted to thank you for your thoughtful comments on my flash fiction piece, "Honey" (just saw your post today). Your words meant a lot to me . . . *thanks* again!

"How do you manage to be so dispassionately passionate?"
This is an incredible question and I have no idea. Wow. Your question (and obvious insight) has me stopped and pondering. I'm pondering. Thank you.
Thanks again, Beate, for commenting and faving "Concentric". Wonderful to have a reader like you reading our stories.
You have no idea how much your Anne Frank comment meant to me, that you got it. I was ready to throw in the towel into the whole project after the first entry. No one was reading the next three which I lumped together, but now took apart again into four separate diary entries. You inspired that.
Thank you about your observant comment about Taking a Bath with My iNuke. It was the most horrifyingly understated line of all.
Thanks, Beate for faving "Notebooks." The piece leads to a larger story in my collection, but I had hoped it could stand on its own. Very encouraged by the response so far.
Thanks for the kind comment on "Riding with the King." Glad you enjoyed.

Thank you so much, Beate!
Thank you so much Beate for that very generous comment on Fariy Tale in Dachau and especially pointing out that particular very sad passage.
Thanks so much, Beate, for commenting and faving "miranda". It's the hardest thing I've ever written. Began as a novella and got slowly whittled down. Wouldn't be surprised if in ten years the story is just a paragraph!
Thank you for reading "Milkshake and Fries"--I read your piece "My mother Loved To Dance"--I admire that aspect of joy and love-thank you for reading and commenting on my work.
Thanks Beate for faving "This Is Not A Love Poem.". I'm working on a collection of poems. This one is part of mt "Ramona" series.
Thank you for faving "Annulling the Future," Beate. Love your comment and the Hafiz quote was great. Thank you! (The bride in the poem is meant to be allegorical--she's the future--I may have made her a little too real!)
Hi, Beate. Thanks for reading and faving "Pink Dress." Your readings are always insightful. Cheers!
Thanks for your comment on Spaghetti Woman. I loved A Scattering of Rivals.

Beate! I adore having a reader like you. Means much that you read my work and like it. Thanks. HM
Thank you so much for saying "Night Flower" was magical Beate. Warm Wishe, Meg
Beate, thanks for your comment about "Turning Thirty." It was about the third time I had invoked Lolita in writing, the other times less blended and "after the fall." In this one I feel I see "her" first independence, and though the cops search, they miss.
I appreciated your reaction to Pig Girl. I also loved your poem Windows. Looking forward to reading more of your work. Thanks so much for the fave.
Beate, I'm so glad you liked 'Used Rainbows.' Means a lot.

The gifts of the dead. I should write about that.

Hi Beate! Thanks so much for reading my post office piece and for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. It did give meaning to the old phrase: "enough to drive me to drink!" It's said that waiting in line is one of the top five stressors in modern life!

Beate - thanks for the nice comments on Heartbreak Waiting to Happen! Haven't been on FN of late and it was lovely to find that an old piece of mine was read anew!
Thanks for the very thoughtful words for "My Mother Was My Sister", Beate!
Beate: Thanks for hunting down and commenting on "A Letter From Your Sisters." I am never surprised, though always pleased, when one of my young, female students becomes enamored of poetry as a result of exposure to Plath's work (more common than Sexton's), but her legacy as well as Sexton's is still a troubling one for female writers.
Hi Beate! Thanks so much for dropping by to read "Go Hard or Go Home" and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. Every dog has his day, I guess!!
Thank you so much for reading and faving "December 15, 2012". Your kind feedback is truly appreciated!! Thank you again!
Hi Beate, Thanks very much for taking the time to read 'The Tale of Brave Grinelda'. I performed it for years as a 2-person quick change comedy at renaissance faires and fringe festivals. It never failed to please the audience and generate money in the hat! I appreciate your comment regarding Anne Sexton. Perhaps she'll see it here and give it a look herself!
Hi Beate, thanks for reading 9 and 5, and thanks for the comment, too. I always appreciate your input. fos.
Thanks for faving "Stevie's Knees," Beate. I appreciate it very much.

Thanks for faving "Not That Kind of Pain," Beate!
Thank you so much for reading and commenting on "Disappointment" Beate! Didn't you guys have similar "folk tales" or urban legends or whatever you might have called them in Germany when you were growing up? The rubber band slingshot is a great idea though!
Hi, Beate. Thanks for reading 'Wattle and Daub.' I greatly appreciate your very insightful comment referring to the universal in the particular; and also, your *.

Thank you for your comments on "Myrtle Beach Daze."
Thank you so much for taking the time to ride along with me for a little while on this madcap farce and make comments. I appreciate your company as I digress into silliness. Ready or not, there's more to come. The Woman in the Wet Raincoat and much much more. It's all in fun!
Thanks, Beate, for commenting on and liking "Joan of Dark."
Hey Beate -- thanks for the comment :) to clarify, are you saying you like the ending that is there or that I should make the "I wore the knowledge of it around my body, like a cape" sentence the ending?
Thanks, Beate for your evocative comment on "City." Haven't seen "Koyaaniquatsi," for a long time though you may be the only person living who can spell it off the top of your head.
(My mum was born on a Friday, yes! Daughter was born on a Sunday.) 13 kisses.
Thanks for the comment on WWJRD. Glad you liked the piece.
Many thanks Beate for the "Wow" on Rear View. That is wonderful to me. Cheers!
Thanks for reading and for your comment, Beate. It excited me to read your tightrope walker piece. I have a novel I'm rewriting about a high wire walker, called "Bernardo the Daredevil." I'm not sure what a "salto" is, though. In my novel the walkers do a "salute" in the middle or at the end of their walk.
"What is it with men and apples?" Ha! No, the man is solely to "blame" here! He couldn't help himself! Thanks for reading "A Journey of Seven Thousand Miles," Beate. Glad you liked it.
Thank you Beate, your comment much appreciated.
My 'For anyone who ever loved' makes me cringe when I see it, but I had to cut so much sentiment from that story, to make it work, and it hurt to cut it, though I knew I had to - so I allowed the author's note its place... as a salute to that side of me, and I was hoping, of everybody. Sentiment such a personal thing, how much to allow. Tricky! (Yes, but what do you *do*!) x
Beate, thanks so much for tracking down "Barrett Reef" and for your lovely comment. As always, the angel on my shoulder doesn't miss a trick! Love you.

You are very kind and I'm happy you have wild roses. I can see them.
Thanks so much for your kind words about 'The Lonely Heart Hunts.' I don't think I've ever had a better compliment.
Thanks, dear Beate, for the appreciation of "Joy of Wind," your roving reading is a recurrent joy in itself.
But of course, Beate, the penguin and the unicorn. They stand side by side, related and relevant. People just think they're "cute" but there's so much more to them, as you and I know well. Thanks for commenting on "<a href="http://www.fictionaut.com/stories/fantomas/happy-feet">Happy Feet</a>". Unicorns also have happy feet (in the right environment), don't they?
Thanks for taking time to read and comment on "Not in Tangier." Haha! yeah- My Mom used to respond to my whining with: "Nobody ever promised you life would be fair!" ;-)
Many (belated) thanks for your comments about “Mother Lies.” You got it exactly and I’m thrilled. May we stay wild!
So glad you liked my strange poem ("Helix Poem"), Beate. Thank you!
Thank you, Beate, for you kind words about 'Waiting.' I do try to keep them to only a handful.
Thank you, my dear, for your kind comment on That Night." It was one of the first short stories I'd ever written and I opened the file the other day and reread it. Decided to post it here. I do so appreciate your support of my work, my angel. Thoughts and encouragement keep me going!
Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it.
Thanks for commenting on And You. It's loosely based on a real incident that happened to my then fiancee and me. Thirty years later we can still make each other laugh by saying "F--- you, and you, and you."
Thank you for reading my poems. The poem talks about validation and validation becomes so important in maintaining a sense of sanity through solitary moments. Thanks again.
Thank you for reading "The Dancing Lady." Much appreciated.

Oh, you are the angel on my shoulder, aren't you? Thanks so much for taking the time to read "My Other Mother is a Ferrari" and your touching comments. I knew very few people would take the time to read it, but hoped a few would. It's a story right from my heart and I'm pleased it touched yours. Thanks for taking the time!
Much appreciate your kind words on "Swimming Lessons." Always enjoy reading your work.
Thanks, Beate, for the kind( and lonesome) comments on "Helen." Ah, well.
Okay, now I've been to your homepage: it looks like we grew up in the same town! And my mom and aunt went to Löhe-Schule - does that sound familiar? ;) Funny how small this world is. I admire what a professional you've managed to become in the English language. When I use it for poetry, I feel like a little child with such a limited repertoire of possibilities.
Thank you, Beate, for liking "Space was playing my favorite music" and giving it a fave. (And how did Karl May make it into your list of favorite authors? Do I smell a German heritage? :) )
Beate, thanks for faving 'Saturday Morning'. Wrote it for my partner, on my way to her house a few years ago. The road's changed some, I'm a little older, but I still look forward to the times we get to spend together. Thanks for reminding me of this piece.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting on "After the Tempest" Beate - I really appreciate it very much!
Thank you for your comment on my poem 'Animal shelter'. Very much appreciated... Surrealism can indeed be welcoming, as much as it can be unwelcoming. Everything resides in the unconscious ;-)
Thanks, Beate, for reading and commenting on Sleepless #3. I always value what you have to say.
Beate, Thank you so much for your kind words about "Jared Sampson's Mom." I can't even tell you how much it means. Just what I needed. Thank you!
Thanks, Beate, for reading and for your comment on Albanian Cognac.
Thanks, Beate, for commenting on and faving "The Sober Boat." And thanks for your lovely reply to me about frivolity. How dull life would be without frivolity!
Thanks so much for your fave! "a corner view of 204 and post" is one of the many poems i've been hoarding away. It's nice to share and receive valuable feedback...
Hi, Beate. Thanks for reading, 'Soroz.' I greatly appreciate your very helpful comment. And also the *.
Thanks so much for the smiles on "One with Everything." Much of my writing is so heavy, but the lighthearted pieces are near and dear to my heart. Glad to be responsible for any smiles.

Beate, thank you again for the suggestion on Tea Party--it's being published in Camroc Press Review and I can feel good about it completely because of that change.
Beate, I put a reply on the story "Tea Party" but wanted to make sure you know that your suggestion was so very right. It's one thing to surprise the reader with an ending, but not if the writer's misled or lied to the reader. Thank you!
Beate, thanks so much for your inspiring comments on 'Radio City'.
Thank you for reading and commenting on Body Double. For the fav, too. Yea, I can't say that I love this, either. Actually, I'm not a big fan of suspense/thrillers, but this is what popped in my head minutes before the deadline.
Beate, I'm glad you enjoyed Leda and the Swan, thanks so much for letting me know
Beate, Thanks very much for taking the time to read Jew. I loved your note.
Thank you Beate for your kind comment on UNCTION. I wrote the poem in one fell swoop a few hours after we scattered my father's ashes. I like to think of THE BLUES ARE RUNNING as how I envisioned the ceremony before it happened, and UNCTION as it was. Peace...
Beate, you’re so kind.
Thank you for reading Allah Akbar. Glad you liked it.
Really appreciate your sensitive response to "Me. You. Love."
Beate, thanks for reading and liking my story DEER
Thanks ever so much for your comments on "Not with a bang..." You've given me a lot to think about in relation to the rewrite, some valuable input. I do appreciate you taking the time. Again, thanks!
Thanks for the read, Beate, and having a laugh as was my nearly sole intent. Lighter than air but fun to write...
Thank you, Beate, for your comment on X. You are so very generous.
Thank you, Beate, for your comment on Elephant. So glad you liked it!

Thank you, Beate, for your comments and fav on "Things you remember..." It means a lot.
Many thanks for your comments and the fave on "Not Today," Beate!
"brozed???" . Bronzed, of course.
Hi, Beate, thanks for digging up "In The Woods" and for the welcome and perceptive read. I'd love to have some of your comments brozed and sitting on the mantle, like trophies. Which to me they are. Too bad I can't Fave your comments, but if I were to it would have to be "Cool and dangerous..." for "Confesssions..." Thanks, as always.
Beate! Thanks for your beautiful comment on A Knobby Thing. So very good to see you round here!
Thanks, Beate :-)
Hi Beate, thanks for reading Bow Ties - and hope all is going well so we will be seeing more of you soon.
Thank you, Beate, for you thoughtful comment on "The Zen Society ..."

Beate - you are ever-kind! Hope you're doing well!
Thank you for faving 'The Getting of Ignorance'! I'm glad it spoke to you...
Thank you for reading and commenting on Tatev. I'll probably cut out the footnotes.
Yes, ' read to live' is righter on. I've had times when writing was out in favor of making a so-called living--and I got by. Don't think I could have done the same with reading.
Thank you for your comments on Street Traveler. I added it to Gloom Cupboard.
Beate, I have a Things I Should Have Done - #1, and Things I Should Have Done - #2, if you have a chance...
Hi Beate, thanks for reading and commenting on Nine and Five, much appreciated. foster.
And for reading and faving poor "Mrs. Booth"!
Thanks for reading "Maps," Beate, and the fave and kind words and appreciating the "not going anywhere, just not going home" line!!
Many thanks, Beate, for reading and faving "Hammer Nail Nail" and sending me off in a loopy fantasy that my last name was Wittgenstein! Always appreciate your kind words.
Beate - thanks for the read of 'Poor Man's'. Funny you mention the last line. The poem began from a conversation where I used the phrase 'forces of childhood, free & protected' - and a poet said it would be a great line. So this one wrote itself backwards, though not really, I tend to get a sense, a feel, I enter a mode, before I write any words or concrete ideas.
Thanks much for your kind comments about "Real Estate." I appreciate it!
Thanks, Beate for those lovely comments. I agree with you too, about the beginning.
Hi Beate - Thanks so much for your kind words on "Off Island"! They are much appreciated :)
Beate, thank you so much for your comment about "Snowed In." To me, it's your comment that is wonderful.
Beate, Thanks you so much for your generous comments about my little story. I appreciate it very much.
Thank you, Beatte, for reading "Classmates," the fav, and your comments. Glad you liked "forgeries of Grady Brandon's love"--a true thing I did, I'm ashamed to say!
Oh, Beatte, thank you so much for reading "Bread, Fish, Serpent, Stone," and the fav and comments. Ezra would thank you too if he could!
Thank you so much for reading The Sloshim Period. Glad you liked the last line.
Thanks so much for your kind comments on "Clean."
Thank you for reading Death Watch and for your comment.
Beate - thank you again - your comment on 'Nobody Told Marni' made my day today. I'm really grateful for your support since I joined, you've helped make Fictionaut feel very welcoming. M
Thank you for your comment on Almost There, Beate! I am glad you felt the love; it is as real as anything else.
Thanks so much, it's a lovely surprise to find you reading my older work, which immediately seems refreshed by the attention.
Thanks for reading and commenting on The Land of the Four Rivers.
Thank you, Beate!
I like that: we write fiction so we can say something truthful, without getting into more trouble than it's worth.
Hi, Beate. Thank you so much for your kind comments on Apple Peel and Flyaway - I appreciate your support very much. Martha
Thanks for reading and commenting on "I Made You."
Thank you, Beate! Thanks for the invitation to join!
Beate - thanks for Desert/Manhattan - the two otters came naturally because they did, somewhere in Nevada after that dry ride. And they were grinning at us. Manhattan was tougher, created story, trying to contrast without seeming forced.
Thanks, Beate. I knew this would open some discussion. As I replied to Sara, does a guy exist who could be this remorseful? Would a teenager like Danny feel so bad so soon, after the event and then carry that guilt for so long? Does his youth stand in his favour - seeing that the part of the brain, which controls impulse behaviour does not mature until 25? I don’t know, I only know that I would (have) forgive/n him.
Beate thanx so much for reading "A Necessary Evil" for the comment and the Fav, much appreciated!
Hi Beate, thanks for reading Eight States Away, and thanks for the comments, too. foster.
Thanks for your comments on Blue Grass. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hi, Beate! Thank you for your persistence in searching out my pieces. I'm taking a Fictionaut break having realized I've made myself ineligible for all the writing contests/prizes by posting here. :(
Having said that, the next time I write a good piece just see if I can resist the temptation of instant gratification by getting the community's comments. Some of us never learn!
Beate - thanks for your (cryptic) comment on 'Margrit' - actually, knowing the craziness of her & Ivar's household, it was tough being Petey the myna! (and I like Dylan or Blake next to anyone)
Thanks once again, Beate, for your kind words.
Thank you Beatte for your kind words about my Villa Monterey story! Best, Meg
thank you for your lovely comment on Villa Monterey Apartment. Very much appreciated!!
Love your stories Beate. You are a good writer!!!
Thanks again, Beate. Such good writing on here. I'm really enjoying it.
Many thanks, Beate, for the fav and the generous comments on "The Secret Animal"!
Thank you, Beate, for reading "Eddie Says" and for your kind words.
Thank you, Beate, for the compliment. I was a bit worried that the reader would think I was sympathetic to the character of Rupert. 'Subtlety' has its own dangers!
Hi Beate - Thank you so much for your comments and for faving "She hadn't wanted one" :)!
Thanks for the comment, Beate! Kafka!
Hi Beate! Just got invited here and loving the digs... hope you are well. Peace, Linda
Yes, ' read to live' is righter on. I've had times when writing was-- out in favor of making a so-called living--and I got by. Don't think I could have done the same with reading.
Hey Beate, I just noticed that you commented on "Pirates". Thank you!
Regarding your comment on your piece being " a little long ..." for the taste of some: that position, as a reader, is one I still don't profess to understand. Assuming one loves to read--lives to read, is more like it-- why on earth would you want pieces any shorter than they need to be. Bring on the words, I say...
Hey Beate, nice to hear from you again, too. Good timing, I guess — you can upload your story to the Bloc group now.
Beate, thank you for visiting 'Saving Prostitutes in Seville' and the much appreciated 'fav.' I salute you and your support of women in the arts. If I gave 10 percent of my income, no one would want the prize!!!
The fav makes me happier yet...thanks so much.
Again thanks for your lovely comment on my story.
Beate - thank you for your comments on Shallow Grave. "Courage" gives me courage!
Susan Griffin! She is great! Thankyou for the kind words about "Water Damage".
Beate, thank you so much for your kind words on my story!
Thanks for your kind words about "Old Wounds."
Thanks for going back and finding my Spider poem, Beate!
(Are you working on your web?)
Hi, Beate. I appreciate you reading "Peach" and leaving such a kind comment. Welcome to Fictionaut!
Hi Beate, thank you so much for commenting/reading "STILL." To hear it moves you is wonderful.
Beate, thanks so much for your interesting comments to my Pedophilia piece. I've heard weird things about Freud and "studied" him in school...but my God your take on his presumed approach to claims of pedophilia is horrifying. Thanks again for your insight.
It's good, Beate, to have your input and your works here at Fictionaut. "Good Friday - Mary Magdalen" is a wonderful story.
Beate, thanx so much for your comments. I hope you keep following my Annie stories, your critique is important to me. I really identify with your "About Me" and I would like to friend you on facebook if youre on there because I think you will like the organization im trying to start. Also, the line you liked in my poem "I Too Dream", i know it can be a bit controversial but i think it speaks a truth many would shy away from.
Hi Beate, what an interesting comment you have made on "Mother Tongue"! It always fascinates me how a poem can bring out so many reactions from people, and this one has certainly touched German speakers ( I'm assuming you are of German descent)
yeah, ms sigriddottir, i get to write on your wall first! welcome! saw you joined 'second tongue' - exciting! looking forward to read more!
