  • About Me

I'm a diamond mine, not sure if I'll ever have the time and energy to liberate all the best stones and match them with their best settings. But I try.

Check out my blog Writing In A Woman's Voice where I publish women's voices: http://writinginawomansvoice.blogspot.com/.

    Why do you write?

I write because I am a woman and I feel women's voices are important. My voice feels small at times, especially compared with what I want to express, but maybe dissatisfaction is what keeps any of us reaching for the stars.
I still want to change the world after all these (66) years--or should I say after all these past 5000 years?--and words happen to be my favorite tool.
One day I hope to have a respectable language of joy (it seems sorrow and such are always more respectable and I want to rebel against that, but haven't been overly successful to date), and a tool for having beauty and love triumph over violence and fear and ugliness. Wish me luck!

    Any favorite authors? Books?

Marilyn French, Doris Lessing, Mary Oliver, Elizabeth George, Anais Nin, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, The Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, Josephine Siebe, Karl May, Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Simone de Beauvoir, Susan Griffin, Ursula K. le Guin, Barbara Walker and William Blake are and/or have been some of the folks who make my heart beat faster.

My favorite book for the last 25 years or so has been Doris Lessing's The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five. Before then it was fairytales and mythology of many kinds.

Thanks, Beate, for your kind comment on Lemony Snickers. The prompt for that came from John Riley's nostalgic boyhood piece, "Testimony", further down the feed. This place is becoming a cyberpsychiatrist's couch for me, nudging my memory further back than I'd ever considered possible.

    Mathew Paust – Jan 03, 2013

Amuses me now to wonder what might have happened had my mom or dad found the notes, figured out where they'd come from and pushed answers up through the crack. I spent a lot of time in the basement and never found any of my notes, altho my curiosity never strayed beyond looking down at the crack from above.

    Mathew Paust – Jan 03, 2013

Beate, thanks for your comments on my flash piece "The Crack". I suspect the notes either drifted down to the basement or landed in some small space between floor boards and the rafters. It never occurred to me to look up in the basement and try to find the crack there.

About the Anne Frank series: believe with all my soul that the only way to fully heal this doomed planet is to look the absolute horror of what has gone on in the face and feel our full hatred and rage and transform the energy into compassion, healing and reparation of the world. If we ignore it, we are doomed.

You have no idea how much your Anne Frank comment meant to me, that you got it. I was ready to throw in the towel into the whole project after the first entry. No one was reading the next three which I lumped together, but now took apart again into four separate diary entries. You inspired that.

    Gloria Garfunkel – Aug 04, 2012

Thank you so much Beate for that very generous comment on Fariy Tale in Dachau and especially pointing out that particular very sad passage.

    J.A. Pak – Aug 02, 2012

Thanks so much, Beate, for commenting and faving "miranda". It's the hardest thing I've ever written. Began as a novella and got slowly whittled down. Wouldn't be surprised if in ten years the story is just a paragraph!

    Bobbi Lurie – Aug 01, 2012

Thank you for reading "Milkshake and Fries"--I read your piece "My mother Loved To Dance"--I admire that aspect of joy and love-thank you for reading and commenting on my work.

    Bill Yarrow – Jul 29, 2012

Thank you for faving "Annulling the Future," Beate. Love your comment and the Hafiz quote was great. Thank you! (The bride in the poem is meant to be allegorical--she's the future--I may have made her a little too real!)

    Gessy Alvarez – Jul 28, 2012

Hi, Beate. Thanks for reading and faving "Pink Dress." Your readings are always insightful. Cheers!

Thank you so much for saying "Night Flower" was magical Beate. Warm Wishe, Meg

    Ann Bogle – Jul 23, 2012

Beate, thanks for your comment about "Turning Thirty." It was about the third time I had invoked Lolita in writing, the other times less blended and "after the fall." In this one I feel I see "her" first independence, and though the cops search, they miss.

    Gloria Garfunkel – Jul 22, 2012

I appreciated your reaction to Pig Girl. I also loved your poem Windows. Looking forward to reading more of your work. Thanks so much for the fave.

    Lucinda Kempe – Jun 18, 2012

    Beate,

Danke for commenting on my memoir micro. A dear writer I know thought I shouldn't circle back around to the money. But the money, tainted as it was, got me out.

The gifts of the dead. I should write about that.

    Wait. I am.

    Best,
    Lucinda

    Michael Gillan Maxwell – May 21, 2012

Hi Beate! Thanks so much for reading my post office piece and for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. It did give meaning to the old phrase: "enough to drive me to drink!" It's said that waiting in line is one of the top five stressors in modern life!

    J. Mykell Collinz – May 20, 2012

Hi, Beate. Thanks for reading 'Truth Or Consequences' and smiling and *. I like your comment about academia and the FBI agents. That's just how I planned it.

Thanks for the very thoughtful words for "My Mother Was My Sister", Beate!

    Joani Reese – May 05, 2012

Beate: Thanks for hunting down and commenting on "A Letter From Your Sisters." I am never surprised, though always pleased, when one of my young, female students becomes enamored of poetry as a result of exposure to Plath's work (more common than Sexton's), but her legacy as well as Sexton's is still a troubling one for female writers.

    Michael Gillan Maxwell – Apr 30, 2012

Hi Beate! Thanks so much for dropping by to read "Go Hard or Go Home" and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. Every dog has his day, I guess!!

Hi Beate, Thanks very much for taking the time to read 'The Tale of Brave Grinelda'. I performed it for years as a 2-person quick change comedy at renaissance faires and fringe festivals. It never failed to please the audience and generate money in the hat! I appreciate your comment regarding Anne Sexton. Perhaps she'll see it here and give it a look herself!

Hey Beate -- thanks for the comment :) to clarify, are you saying you like the ending that is there or that I should make the "I wore the knowledge of it around my body, like a cape" sentence the ending?

    David Ackley – Mar 09, 2012

Thanks, Beate for your evocative comment on "City." Haven't seen "Koyaaniquatsi," for a long time though you may be the only person living who can spell it off the top of your head.

    Luke Tennis – Mar 06, 2012

Thanks for reading and for your comment, Beate. It excited me to read your tightrope walker piece. I have a novel I'm rewriting about a high wire walker, called "Bernardo the Daredevil." I'm not sure what a "salto" is, though. In my novel the walkers do a "salute" in the middle or at the end of their walk.

    Bill Yarrow – Mar 05, 2012

"What is it with men and apples?" Ha! No, the man is solely to "blame" here! He couldn't help himself! Thanks for reading "A Journey of Seven Thousand Miles," Beate. Glad you liked it.

    Penny Goring – Mar 05, 2012

Thank you Beate, your comment much appreciated.
My 'For anyone who ever loved' makes me cringe when I see it, but I had to cut so much sentiment from that story, to make it work, and it hurt to cut it, though I knew I had to - so I allowed the author's note its place... as a salute to that side of me, and I was hoping, of everybody. Sentiment such a personal thing, how much to allow. Tricky! (Yes, but what do you *do*!) x

    Sally Houtman – Mar 04, 2012

Beate, thanks so much for tracking down "Barrett Reef" and for your lovely comment. As always, the angel on my shoulder doesn't miss a trick! Love you.

But of course, Beate, the penguin and the unicorn. They stand side by side, related and relevant. People just think they're "cute" but there's so much more to them, as you and I know well. Thanks for commenting on "<a href="http://www.fictionaut.com/stories/fantomas/happy-feet">Happy Feet</a>". Unicorns also have happy feet (in the right environment), don't they?

    Maren Sandt – Jan 20, 2012

Okay, now I've been to your homepage: it looks like we grew up in the same town! And my mom and aunt went to Löhe-Schule - does that sound familiar? ;) Funny how small this world is. I admire what a professional you've managed to become in the English language. When I use it for poetry, I feel like a little child with such a limited repertoire of possibilities.

    Maren Sandt – Jan 20, 2012

Thank you, Beate, for liking "Space was playing my favorite music" and giving it a fave. (And how did Karl May make it into your list of favorite authors? Do I smell a German heritage? :) )

Thanks for the comment of "Base," Beate. I liked your notion of the characters as survivors of some nuclear holocaust, scrapping in the ruins. We're all survivors of the lacerating history of recent times, scarred, stunned, blunted by horrors we mostly refuse to remember or imagine.

Adolescents playing adolescents ... can they do that?

RE past discusssions of bears and other fauna, last night I went out into the cold for a moment and heard coyotes howling and yipping a few streets away. Beate - thanks for the read of 'Poor Man's'. Funny you mention the last line. The poem began from a conversation where I used the phrase 'forces of childhood, free & protected' - and a poet said it would be a great line. So this one wrote itself backwards, though not really, I tend to get a sense, a feel, I enter a mode, before I write any words or concrete ideas.

    Bonnie ZoBell – Apr 30, 2010

Beate - thanks for Desert/Manhattan - the two otters came naturally because they did, somewhere in Nevada after that dry ride. And they were grinning at us. Manhattan was tougher, created story, trying to contrast without seeming forced.

    Myra King – Apr 13, 2010

Thanks, Beate. I knew this would open some discussion. As I replied to Sara, does a guy exist who could be this remorseful? Would a teenager like Danny feel so bad so soon, after the event and then carry that guilt for so long? Does his youth stand in his favour - seeing that the part of the brain, which controls impulse behaviour does not mature until 25? I don’t know, I only know that I would (have) forgive/n him.

    sara t. – Apr 13, 2010

Thanks for your comments on Blue Grass. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Lou Godbold – Apr 06, 2010

Hi, Beate! Thank you for your persistence in searching out my pieces. I'm taking a Fictionaut break having realized I've made myself ineligible for all the writing contests/prizes by posting here. :(

Having said that, the next time I write a good piece just see if I can resist the temptation of instant gratification by getting the community's comments. Some of us never learn!

Beate - thanks for your (cryptic) comment on 'Margrit' - actually, knowing the craziness of her & Ivar's household, it was tough being Petey the myna! (and I like Dylan or Blake next to anyone)

    Myra King – Apr 06, 2010

Thanks once again, Beate, for your kind words.

    Meg Pokrass – Apr 06, 2010

Thank you, Beate, for reading "Eddie Says" and for your kind words.

    Lou Godbold – Mar 24, 2010

Thank you, Beate, for the compliment. I was a bit worried that the reader would think I was sympathetic to the character of Rupert. 'Subtlety' has its own dangers!

    M.H. – Mar 23, 2010

Hi Beate - Thank you so much for your comments and for faving "She hadn't wanted one" :)!

    David Ackley – Mar 14, 2010

Yes, ' read to live' is righter on. I've had times when writing was-- out in favor of making a so-called living--and I got by. Don't think I could have done the same with reading.

    Carol Reid – Mar 14, 2010

Hey Beate, I just noticed that you commented on "Pirates". Thank you!

    David Ackley – Mar 13, 2010

    Hi Beate,

Regarding your comment on your piece being " a little long ..." for the taste of some: that position, as a reader, is one I still don't profess to understand. Assuming one loves to read--lives to read, is more like it-- why on earth would you want pieces any shorter than they need to be. Bring on the words, I say...

    Adios – Mar 07, 2010

Hey Beate, nice to hear from you again, too. Good timing, I guess — you can upload your story to the Bloc group now.

    Lou Godbold – Mar 05, 2010

Beate, thank you for visiting 'Saving Prostitutes in Seville' and the much appreciated 'fav.' I salute you and your support of women in the arts. If I gave 10 percent of my income, no one would want the prize!!!

    David Ackley – Mar 03, 2010

The fav makes me happier yet...thanks so much.

    David Ackley – Mar 03, 2010

    Dear Beate,

    David Erlewine – Jan 28, 2010

Beate, thanks so much for your interesting comments to my Pedophilia piece. I've heard weird things about Freud and "studied" him in school...but my God your take on his presumed approach to claims of pedophilia is horrifying. Thanks again for your insight.

    Sam Rasnake – Jan 24, 2010

It's good, Beate, to have your input and your works here at Fictionaut. "Good Friday - Mary Magdalen" is a wonderful story.

    sara t. – Jan 21, 2010

Beate, thanx so much for your comments. I hope you keep following my Annie stories, your critique is important to me. I really identify with your "About Me" and I would like to friend you on facebook if youre on there because I think you will like the organization im trying to start. Also, the line you liked in my poem "I Too Dream", i know it can be a bit controversial but i think it speaks a truth many would shy away from.

    Nora Nadjarian – Jan 20, 2010

Hi Beate, what an interesting comment you have made on "Mother Tongue"! It always fascinates me how a poem can bring out so many reactions from people, and this one has certainly touched German speakers ( I'm assuming you are of German descent)

    Finnegan Flawnt – Jan 20, 2010
