About Me

All I ever wanted to do was write. I wrote a book of poetry called 'Strip' in 2007 (Salt publishing) about porn and being female. I don't have any publication record or anything with prose though but I love writing it. I didn't write any fiction for years due to feeling discouraged about it, but I'm writing it again now and hoping to get better at it and find the guts to send it out sometime. :)

Why do you write?

I don't know how not to. As a kid I was on my own alot and writing was the place I could have fun, most be myself and express ideas. Writing is like telling a joke, making an observation, I'd never be able to deliver the punchline of in person. The writing habit stuck.
I'm creative in odd ways, I can't paint or anything but I like fixing old broken furniture up,tiling, decorating, making plaster architectural mouldings, things that require patience and repetition seem very satisfying to me. I sometimes start to wonder if my work isn't good enough to waste my time. But nothing makes me happier than the odd occasion when I'll write something that surprises me.

Any favorite authors? Books?

Raymond Carver, Alice Munro, Lorrie Moore, Tobias Wolf, Rick Moody, Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath, JD Salinger, Joyce Carol Oates short stories, Sharon Olds, the Brontes,DH Lawrence, Hardy,
the list goes on. I have a few books I keep reading again every so often, ' Iain Banks 'the wasp factory,, Carver's work, but one of my favourites must be 'We so seldom look on love' by Barbara gowdy- i've bought this three times now, as everytime I loan it out i need to read it again before it comes back.

Thanks for your comment on Down to Earth - it's so interesting when others spot things you haven't identified in your own work, like the sticking the urn back in between his 'favourite' books - shows (to me) how much in writing goes on at a subconscious level. Really enjoying reading yours ...

Angel! THanks so much for your comments on Yellow Teeth. I am so glad you liked the relaxed dialogue of the characters. I really like that part too (one of my few stories I can read and feel "good" about). Cheers and thank you again! David

Yay! I thought I was the only with those damn demons! It's really re asurring somehow to know that even good writers get them and can kick their asses!

David Erlewine – Mar 06, 2009

Hi, Angel! Looking forward to reading the Island. I took five years off from writing and am now getting back into it. Feels good to write what I want to write. F the demons!

angel readman – Mar 06, 2009

awww- thanks siolo. Those demons are tricky, and you are right the only thing to do is write anyway, even if you think it's no good you have to realise you're demon filled and therefore not a reliable source! My MA was tough, no one there liked my work, they were almost all teachers, sayin g things like 'yes it's interesting, but no one would ever publish it'- it was gutting. Felt good though when i got a distinction and they didn't :)
Just keep wriitng and painting girl- you rock :)

Heather Fowler – Mar 05, 2009

Yay, talent! You're here. :) So glad to see you here, too! xoxol, H

Siolo Thompson – Mar 05, 2009

Angel! I just read your bio here and it kicked me in the stomach, seriously?: "I am now loving prose again and slowly banishing the demons of my MA that say I'm no good at it, which stopped me writing it for so long." WTF? If you are no good at it who the fuck has a chance? I'm not kidding when I say that everything of yours I have read over the past few months made me feel like an amateur. I can't belive you have any doubt about your fitness as a writer at all. I've got the same demons and I've come to the point where I just dont care anymore because even if I suck, I cant not write, I cant stop and you, you dont suck, you have talent and this uncanny ability to render the details of life in a way that makes everything look like a 1950's snap shot or one of those funny viewfinder toys - its fucking magic what you do, dont doubt it for a second. Please.
