About Me

My writing has appeared in StoryQuarterly, Salt Hill, The Believer, Blackbird, QuickFiction, Vestal Review, 3rd Bed, Diagram, Drunken Boat, Caffeine Destiny, Mississippi Review, Blackbird, Good Foot, Pindeldyboz, Smokelong Quarterly, Swink, Wet Ink, Sleepingfish, and is forthcoming in Oyster Boy Review, Caketrain and Matchbook. I am writing a novel about a moving company in Brooklyn, and looking for a home for two other completed novels. My Flash Fiction chapbook, Hello Friends and Neighbors, was a finalist in the Diagram/New Michigan Press contest and was short-listed in the Rosemetal Press Contest. It, too, needs a home. Update: my short story collection Walk Back from Monkey School was published by Press 53.

Why do you write?

I write for sanity and for those vital ah ha! moments that make life somewhat bearable and sometimes super fun. I write because reading saved me from tv and deep misery as a kid. I write because it gives me a goal and a purpose on this planet. I also write because I greatly enjoy the feel and the sound of tapping the keys: click click click pause click click click clunk (spacebar).

Any favorite authors? Books?

Carole Shields, John Edgar Wideman, Jamaica Kincaid, Amy Hempel, Lewis Nordan, JM Coetzee, Grace Paley, etc. From Lit Mags I've come to love the stories of Kathy Fish, Kim Chinquee, Anthony Tognozzini, Paul A. Toth, Mark Yakich, Ander Monson, Pia Ehrhardt, etc. There are more, but I'll fill them in later. I love lit mags! Someday they will rule the planet. Along with puppets. Lit mags and puppets will rule.

Your 'about me' struck me funny. I have a mostly completed book with a mover who briefly appears in a couple New York City scenes. His name is Moishe. I got his name off a truck in a Google maps street level shot of NYC. He was probably moving someone to Brooklyn. Good luck with your book.

"Dear England, Please Send Me a Redheaded Boy" is a fantastic piece.

Brad Davis – Sep 05, 2008

hey, do you read Ali Smith? I've read 2 of her books. "Oops" reminded me a little of Smith's "Hotel World."
