What kind of pain is it? Stabbing?
Shooting? Throbbing? Tell me. Is it
a radiating pain? Does it burn? Point
to it. Is it a pain or more of an ache?
Does it feel muscular? Is it constant
or occasional? How severe is it? Is it
infrequent or recurring? When did it
start? What do you think you did?
Lift something? Move funny? Is it
relieved by exercise? Better lying down,
sitting, or standing? Does applied heat
make it better? What about ice? You
think maybe it could be stress related?
No, different. A different kind of pain.
Heh, love/d this one. Each time I go to a doctor I forget half the things I wanted to complain about...
Probably better off. *
Great approach to line & syntax. Good form, Bill. I like.
Oh yeah. What a gem.
Painfully clear and clearly different. < * >
This should have a stand up bass playing an uptempo jazz riff behind it when read aloud. I like the way this bops and flows. It's really funny. Reminds me of a totally spot-on satire of a pain reliever commercial Dan Ackroyd did with the original SNL cast. Good one! *
Different. *
good stuff

re: "Not That Kind of Pain"
Sometimes putting an appreciation into words requires more critical energy than one has at hand and one gets nervous, just as when one is trying to draw something subtle and exquisite and temporary. One is the agent of record and one may not be up to task of representing all the implications and strength in a line of verse or prose or the line of a white shoulder against a dark background. One realizes in depicting this plight, one has addressed a new "different kind of pain," one that is undercelebrated. The anxiety of appreciation.
I think I feel everyone of those achs. ouch!
This was one of my favorites from POINTED SENTENCES, Bill. Great work. *
Bill the energy here is so opposite of pain energy, or maybe not, maybe it's all pain energy, maybe all energy is pain. Whatever, this one really worked for me.
*
Happy Derek published this. I love this!!!! It is great. I am faving this. *
Another good one from a good book, Bill.*
Gosh. You live inside my head, Bill. Different kind of head.
This would be perfect as a sampler on my wall, on a teatowel, a poster, a T-shirt - I wanna see the movie. *
Having gone through so much pain in the last five months, this spoke to me. It told me just where the pain is. *
I think you covered everything, Bill. Nicely put down. *
Recently I was in a hospital bed and in my line of sight was a "How bad does it hurt?" poster. Have you seen these?
Ten cound faces. Number one is a very happy smiley face. Two is pleasant. Three is neutral. four is a little sad... On up to ten which looks like Munch's SCREAM. Every few hours a nurse would come in and point to the poster and ask. One time I said 7 and she gave me intravenous Dilaudid. So, if they ever ask you.... say seven to 10.
A kind of pain with no set answer. Very nice, I feel this pain too often, didn't want to read at first, but thank you Bill, well explained.
As a provider, the last line baffles me always. But as a patient, I totally get it. Loved this in PS (used it with my students) and love it here. Peace *
