About Me
Author of Ramones (from Continuum's 33 1/3 series) and A Cultural Dictionary of Punk, 1974-1982. Stories and essays in n+1, Exquisite Corpse, Oxford American, and McSweeney's Internet Tendency. Columnist (10/40/70) for The Rumpus. Passion for teaching, at the University of Detroit Mercy, on Livernois and Six Mile.
"Valley Rugstore," first published here, was selected to be one of the Significant Objects stories, auctioned off with the object itself: a small music box disguised as a wrapped gift. The winning bid was over $140.00, all proceeds going to McSweeney's 826 National.
Why do you write?
I love the risks of writing, the dark corners that lay potentially behind each word. When it's working at full throttle, writing can introduce disorder into order. There is also a thrill and terror at connecting with readers, who may very well be complete strangers until they read my words. Once they do that, we are linked in some mysterious way.
Any favorite authors? Books?
The writers I love are always changing, but in the rotation is Olena Kalytiak Davis, Brian Evenson, George Lippard, bell hooks, George W.S. Trow, Tom McCarthy, Donna Haraway, Charles Brockden Brown, Kelly Link, Elizabeth Hand, Dudley Randall.
