What Ever Happened to Old Tom Joad
by Jane Hammons
Someone hollers Okie. He runs. But he's sore from the last beating. Hungry, too. When they drag him to the aqueduct, Tom Joad claws earth. He leaves his mark, a shallow furrow in the ground, and wishes he'd let that retard Noah teach him how to swim.
Brevity is a hammer here, Jane. Strong way to end. This piece has fire.
Times change. People don't.
