About Me

I live in Manhattan but Canadian by birth and inclination. My green card says I am an Alien of Extraordinary Ability, but such abilities, so far, seem to be relegated to being able to wiggle both ears at will, having perfect pitch and making 99% of deadlines. Most people seem to know me for my crime fiction blog Confessions of an Idiosyncratic Mind (at the already-linked URL above). I also write monthly crime fiction columns for the Baltimore Sun and Los Angeles Times, and contribute to print and online publications too numerous to name, but my freelance career has included writing test prep questions for an academic decathalon, pseudonymous young adult books on infectious diseases, digital moviemaking and fan fiction, reviewing audiobooks and manuscript consultation.

In a parallel life, I completed an M.S. in Forensic Science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of New York in February 2004 and still harbor faint hopes of actually making use of the degree someday. I used to root for the Montreal Expos; that should indicate everything you'd want to know about my sports affiliations.

Why do you write?

"Why do you write?"

"To keep from dying."
