About Me

I've published fiction in VQR, The Blue Moon Review, The Collagist, and in a collection, "D.C. Noir," edited by George Pelecanos (Akashic Books). My nonfiction has appeared in the Boston Review, Slate, the Washington Post, and elsewhere. I'm a former contributing editor of the Washington Post Book World. These days I'm a writer at the Chronicle of Higher Education, where I cover publishing, libraries, and archives and write humanities features. Favorite stories for CHE include a look at what's happening in the world of fairy-tale scholarship, an article about the man who recreated Mary Shelley's original draft of "Frankenstein," and a feature on the first translation of the Aeneid by a female classicist. On Twitter I'm @JenHoward.

Why do you write?

What else is there to do?

Any favorite authors? Books?

Too many to name, really, but here are a few favorites: Joan Aiken, Jane Austen, Eric Ambler, Raymond Chandler, Charles Dickens, William Gibson, Graham Greene, James Hynes, Ursula K. LeGuin, J.R.R. Tolkien...
