About Me

I'm working on a young adult novel. I've done some freelance writing and reviewing for Publishers Weekly, The Washington Post Book World, Kirkus, and Strange Horizons, and I'm currently in my last semester in the MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program at Vermont College. Oh, and I write a seriously flippant advice column for Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet.

Why do you write?

Because otherwise I'm grumpy and the neighbors complain?

Any favorite authors? Books?

John Kessel's Corrupting Dr. Nice, Kelly Link's Magic for Beginners, Karen Joy Fowler (especially Sister Noon), Geoff Ryman's Air, Jincy Willett, Ysabeau Wilce, Joy Williams, Eduardo Galeano, Rosamond Purcell, et many, many others I'm too lazy to list.

I got a lot of mileage out of my Alphasmart. Took me through graduate school. I was always surprised that more writers weren't using them... they could easily be marketed now as "internet distraction-free writing tools"

Are you using an Alphasmart in that picture?

Of course Joy Williams. How many times have I read "Breaking and Entering"? I loved the ghost in "The Quick and the Dead." Have you read "The Changeling"?
