The Dark
It chokes
It threatens
To consume me
Im Scared
Mommy
Im confused
Everything is
A Secret
But I Know
Who is that man
You're with
I call Uncle
But I wait
Outside
Why does your hug
Feel safe
But anothers
Feels
So Wrong
Why do I obey
And do as
He says
On my knees
Willingly
But at night
The monster
Is in the room
And my cry
Is Silent

Dedicated to those who have suffered the trauma of sexual abuse.
Sara, this poem has power, and the perspectives offered from this poem rises inside of me like a proud predator about to descend upon the fertile hunting grounds of my mind.....
Thanx,Hazar, glad to offer prey for the hunter!
A wonderfully surprising amount of characterization for such a short piece. Well done.
This is very strong. The voice of the small girl. I don't think you need last stanza.
Everything is/ A Secret/ But I Know--this says it all.....for me.
I agree - "Everything is / A Secret / But I Know" is the heart of it, and brilliantly rendered. I would also hold off the last stanza - the preceding lines are so evocative because they tell us the truth obliquely, which is how the character herself experiences it. The last stanza's directness breaks with that.
Terrifying poem. Very powerful, Sara.
Consider the first stanza as a possible refrain.
