Borges in the SUB
by Jane Hammons
One day when I was an undergraduate at the University of New Mexico, I was sitting in the SUB drinking bad coffee when the girl sitting next to me leaned over and whispered, "There's Borges." I had no idea what she was talking about, but I looked in the direction she was pointing and saw a man in a suit sitting in the SUB drinking bad coffee.
This was the first thing I read this morning and it made me smile. Thank yoo!
Hah! Magically realistic.

Thanks Carol and James. Had to put this up before I dash off to work--late already--but for Borges and Fictionaut--I will pay the price :)
So that's who he is! Thank you. *
You had me at Borges in the title, Jane.
Especially like how the image of drinking bad coffee ties this piece together. Nice work.
Well done, Hammons. fave
This is awesome.
It's fun to keep changing the name of the author in my mind. The more unlikely, the better.
There's Pynchon.
Thanks for reading Jack, Sam and MaryAnne (that has a nice beat :) I can absolutely remember what he looked like. And years later when I read Borges, a little light bulb went on: oh, that's Borges!
And I do love the idea of inserting the names of different authors as Matthew suggests. Pynchon, Salinger . . . who else?
Philip Roth, one famous eyebrow raised, and you know he's thinking, "Damn bad coffee."
Harold Bloom sipping and forgiving the Mr. Coffee for its anxiety of influence. After all, Bunn came first.
Great recollection, Jane!*
"There's Cheever, Styron and Updike." I had no idea what she was talking about, but I looked in the direction she was pointing and saw three men in suits sitting in the SUB drinking bad coffee.
Yeah, that would be cool. . .
Terrific and fun!

Thanks for your comments on my Borges sighting. Keep your eyes peeled. You never know who you might see drinking bad coffee!
Ha! Very much fun, here's to bad coffee. Peace *
Thanks for stopping by for some fun, Linda1
Sweet, Jane-Roswell-girl.
Even the greats drink bad coffee! *
Thanks, Christian--I think a lot of great literature has been fueled by bad coffee! And unfiltered cigarettes.
