I'm a retired police officer (21 year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Dept.) working on a true crime memoir. I live with my husband and our two teenagers on Long Island. I'm a breast cancer survivor, and I volunteer with the American Cancer Society, and I serve on the Board of Directors of Crime Stoppers of Suffolk County, Inc. I was fortunate to have studied memoir writing with Frank McCourt in 2007 at the Southampton Writers Conference, and Creative Nonfiction with Matt Klam and Screenplay Adaptation with Stephen Molton in 2008.
I enjoy writing short fiction. I have a story included in the upcoming W.W. Norton's Hint Fiction: An Anthology of Stories in 25 Words or Fewer, edited by Robert Swartwood. I have pieces included in Six Sentences: The Love Book, and Six Sentences: Volume III. I also enjoy writing essays, too. My essay, "The Watcher," published in The Southampton Review in Spring 2010, won a Creative NonFiction Award from the Public Safety Writers Association. Two of my flash fiction stories won Flash Fiction Awards from PSWA this year. I have my own blog: http://www.kathleenaryan.com and write with fellow NY/TriState Sisters in Crime at http://www.womenofmystery.net. My username on Twitter is @katcop13. I write because I have to ~ I can't imagine NOT writing!
I have eclectic tastes. Memoirs: All of Frank McCourt's; James McBride: The Color of Water. Jeannette Walls: The Glass Castle. True Crime: Fatal Vision by Joe McGinnis; The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, A Rip in Heaven by Jeanine Cummins Some favorite authors include Stephen King, John Grisham, Jeffrey Deaver The poetry books of Billy Collins Short Story collections
