I love Bruno Schulz's "Street of Crocodiles"! There's also a short stop-motion animation (The Brothers Quay, 1986)adaptation of the book, which doesn't do too badly rendering the same sort of creepy strangeness...though I do sort of remember noting the considerable distance between the two, it's still worth digging around for.
