About Me

I am Artistic Director and one of the founders of Live Bait Theater in Chicago, a theater that specializes in new work and a playwright. Four of my plays have been awarded developmental support from the National Endowment for the Arts. My play, “ Blind Tasting”, received a Jeff Citation for Best New Work in 2003. My most recent play “Escape”, inspired by Chicago female Police Officers in the sex crimes unit, premiered in 2007. Most recently I directed Nicole Hollander’s solo shows, “ Plastic Surgery Or A Really Good Hair Cut” (2006) and “ Tales of Graceful Aging From the Planet Denial” (2007). I have a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and have taught at Chicago Dramatists and guest-lectured at the School of the Art Institute, Loyola University, and Columbia College. Currently I am an artist in residence at Sullivan High School where I am teaching Memoir and Personal Biography.

Why do you write?

Finding inspiration: Being out in the world and meeting and talking to a wide range of people. Then finding time alone to process it all. I love the act of writing; I enjoy the word play, the ideas and the unpredictable quality of the process. I like having my writing go places I didn't expect. In the early stages of a project I like doing the research and discovering new details on selected topics.

Any favorite authors? Books?

When I am in the middle of a writing project, I like reading non-fiction. I devour biographies. I like true crime non-fiction as well as mysteries. Henning Mankell, the Swedish mystery writer is a current favorite. I look forward to reading the Best American Crime Reporting Anthology every year. I enjoy Joan Didion and Vivian Gornick's personal memoir and essay work. As far as the classics go, I like Edith Wharton and Henry James.
My favorite book is Anna Karenina. My favorite authors include MFK Fisher, Alice Munro and Raymond Carver. I am in the middle of reading Bridge of Signs, by Richard Russo and am enjoying that.
