Voice of the Century
by Gary Hardaway
She chirps your balance,
the date today,
each turn you need to take
to find that great Thai restaurant
your friends have praised,
and warns of payments due
without a hint of condescension.
More ears have heard her voice
than ever will listen to Maria Callas.
Feminine, safe, though disembodied,
she shapes your life in ways
your mother never could.
Surely, generous royalties
direct deposit to her account
each cheerfully annunciated day.
Good writing, Gary.
Favorite part - "Feminine, safe, though disembodied,
she shapes your life in ways
your mother never could."
Nice work. *
I kept thinking of Siri when I read this.
*, Gary. Well-written. Great line: "...More ears have heard her voice
than ever will listen to Maria Callas."
Inventive, poetic commentary on today's world.
Siri-usly!
I know. Annoying. Damned near got me killed one time, too. *
When my wife and I were first married we ate so much in the local Thai restaurant the owner sent us a Christmas card.
Wonderful.*
I heard her on the bus one day. She kept telling me: "Mow the lawn. Mow the lawn."
Curious.
*
It took me a while to get it. I still use maps. Arcane, no?
*
Nice *
Wonderful - life as we never imagined it, twenty years ago. Or maybe we did?
What a great piece!
Funny, I read this part -
each cheerfully annunciated day -
as enunciated...
Sometimes I think she is a demon spirit.

Thank you all for the readings, comments and stars. I am grateful for the kind responses.
Aha! I have not heard this voice, except on TV, and do not plan to ever hear her chirp, but I love this poem anyway.
21st century indeed. I was going to say siriously, but David beat me to it.
A nice flow to this, Gary. I really like the rhythms. *
Thank you, Nonnie, Gary, and Foster.
I've listened to her on other people's devices. "without a hint of condescension." *
thank you, Beate.
