We met because I hate the actor Bruce Willis. I knew he was in the movie, I thought I could manage, but eventually I had to excuse myself to the lobby. That's when I saw Martin Ripley, blowing out his sinuses into a napkin. I squirted butter on my popcorn and said is there any chance you could do that outside? He gave me a destroyed look that, I confess, broke my heart. He was super tall and slightly malformed in a way that indicated possible chromosome damage. Do you like Bruce Willis? I asked, and he said sure, who doesn't like Bruce Willis? And I said me, I can't stand him and Martin Ripley said well... He tossed the napkin and asked if I'd like to go with him. Where, I said and he said anywhere. Jupiter. Cincinnati. He said first he had to take Maalox to his mother and there was the dry cleaning to pick up, a book to return. I thought about the guy, the other guy, I left in the theater, but here was Martin Ripley, smiling and introducing himself and shaking my hand. I looked up into his face, the asymmetry of his jaw like the asymmetry of my chest and I said let's go. Spring was breathing puffs of steam out of the asphalt and the sun on the melting snow hurt my eyes and Martin Ripley drove as if the two of us were on a long trip, something important and urgent, as if someone far away had died and here we were, speeding to the wake.

Remember reading this during a flashathon, didnt realize it got Night Trained. Nice. Love the way it opens up, literally departs toward somewhere unexpected.
Kathy, I truly love this. Your writing evokes something inside me that I can't quite express. I guess the word is ineffable, but that word sounds odd.
The asymmetry of his jaw like the asymmetry of my chest...wow, I applaud that line.
I would love to hang out with Martin Ripley...what a cool character.
Thanks Tim and hi!
Thanks much, David. I like the word ineffable...
I actually used to use words like ineffable in daily conversations. I was a big vocab buff. Now I just feel uncertain throwing it out there.
Blowing out his sinuses into a napkin. So funny and hardy!Super tall and slightly malformed. Wow--what an image.First he had to take Maalox to his mother. Another greatly funny image. As if speeding to the wake. So very much to like here,Kathy.
thanks for reading, Darryl
This reads like a little dream kernel -- spontaneous, detailed, open-ended, slightly strange, dotted with familiar faces. And all so compact. David beat me to applauding the asymmetry line, but clap, clap, nonetheless. Well done.
hi Christina, thanks for reading...
How do you do it? I love so many of these paragraph-long pieces you post here. You get so much power--and so much of a plot--out of just a few words.
Thanks so much, Jon...
I agree with all of the above comments - This is beautiful.
Thank you, Marcelle. I just read your flash and loved it.
"I looked up into his face, the asymmetry of his jaw like the asymmetry of my chest and I said let's go."
This is what you do so well--you evoke whole worlds with a swift subtle sentence.
As always, stunning.
kathy -- this is so fun and almost conversational. you always make it look so easy ...
love the title and can't stand bruce willis, either!
Ha, thanks Lauren!
Sinuses blown juxtaposed with squirted butter!
The voice, the entire piece, feels effortless (when of course that's the hardest thing to do): here was Martin Ripley, smiling and introducing himself and shaking my hand.
This just says joy ride from the first word. Great read! And when I lived in NYC (1980s) Bruce Willis used to bartend at a club that my friend Rachel's uncle owned (I think it was called Private Eyes?) He was as much of an a-hole then as he became Hollywood style.
Really like this, Kathy.
Plus I used to teach with a guy named Martin Ripley!
"Spring was breathing puffs of steam out of the asphalt and the sun on the melting snow hurt my eyes"
Very fine writing.
Hey, thanks for reading this one, Bill! That's pretty funny that you knew a Martin Ripley. Love getting reads on "old" postings here, so double thanks to you.
Enjoyed!
Life in a nutshell. This is superb, from title all the way to speeding to the wake.
Thank you, Beate!
"Where, I said and he said anywhere. Jupiter. Cincinnati. "
One of the best lines of dialog ever. Brilliant piece. *
Thank you, kindly, Kim!
Oh, Kathy-- this is a total gem. How do you do what you do? Love the whole sense of this, the girl, Martin Ripley, his asymmetry, hers, this is a small miracle.
BTW, Bruce Willis used to live on our street (before he was famous, before we lived here). But our street is famous for Bruce Willis once living above someone's garage
Oh, Susan, you're a doll for reading this. Thank you! That's funny about Bruce Willis on your street!
Just kind of stumbled upon this this morning during my browsing. Love it!
Oh I'm glad you stumbled on this, Matthew. Thanks so much!
And this is WHY!
Hey Thank YOU, David!!! For giving this story its 15th FAVE and I am still LAUGHING at the story you POSTED, so thanks for THAT too!
