Thumbs Up Jesus
by Gary Hardaway
My boss is a rah-rah fellowship Christian.
He decorates his monitor
with a twenty-first century Jesus-
all smiles, pointing to us, with a big thumbs up
and a friendly wink. Good buddy Jesus.
Life coach Jesus. Enthusiastic
and optimistic Jesus, no cross
or crown of thorns in sight.
No beatific melancholy
of spirit become suffering flesh face
anywhere around. No pieta Jesus.
Just this welcoming and cheerful
visage on the screen
to reassure my boss
that all his trials, Lord,
will be rewarded
now and in the Kingdom to come,
now and at the hour of his death.
Thumbs up. ♡
And when they come to his door he says he gave at the office. *
Love it.
Thank you, FM, Matt, and Neil.
Accurately summarizes that meeting place between self-actualization and religion.*
Thanks, Amanda.
Yeah, I know a few people like that. Enjoyed. *
Thanks, Charlotte.
That first line is the perfect set-up for this. "Life coach Jesus" is my favorite. ; )
Thanks, Kathy.
Whoa, nice turn. Didn't see that coming from good buddy Jesus. I like both the comedy and the dark shift in tone. Well done.
Thanks, David.
What David A. said. *
Love the play with song near the end. Good piece.
*, Gary. Your poet and his good poetry has your boss figured out. And he understands a lot about ol' Jesus. He's pretty darn special. Christ almighty, what a pal.
Thank you, John,
Sam,
and David.
I loved this. There's something so vapid in this version of Jesus, and you expose it, totally.
Thanks, Gary.
Well done.
Thank you, Adam.
Wonderful writing.
Thank you, Paul.
So much to like here, Gary. Life coach Jesus, eternally hilarious. *
