Predator
by Gary Hardaway
I kill all the time. The cockroach,
scurrying across my floor.
The spider who fangs
an indeterminate venom.
Mosquitoes and gnats
too slow to escape my swat.
Uncounted hens and piglets
die at my demand. The killing floor
runs red for me. I am
monstrous to creatures small and great,
ruthless, insatiable, indifferent to suffering.
I should be hunted down by insect villagers,
bearing tiny torches and pitchforks,
and staked through my old cold heart.
Nicely viewed from the other side. I liked the additional intimations of legendary monstrosity in the aroused villagers and the stake through the heart.
Enjoyed very much. "I kill all the time" captured my attention. And then I loved "I am
monstrous to creatures small and great."
I think this will touch all who read it Favorite line "I should be hunted down by insect villagers" At first glance a lighthearted jab at our humanity, but do not ponder for long, - who really wants to open that door?
Vivid, witty. Not for the faint hearted. The concluding image is great! *
oh, but the insects are waiting, and let's not talk about the microbes, etc. *
"ruthless, insatiable, indifferent to suffering." Liked this perspective and the crisp, precise images throughout.*
Thank you all very much for the readings and comments.
Really like the Frankenstein image at the end. Yes.
How do you combat violence? With more violence.
Only thing missing here is you standing atop the windmill while the insects set fire to it.
Sam, the horror movies I watched growing up always had sympathetic monsters. The new ones seem just monstrous.
Force and counterforce. Yin yang of history, Amanda.
Thanks for listening, George.
Love.

"I should be hunted down by the insect villagers . ." This is great. Made me think of Shirley Jackson
