writer’s block

writer's block
round & round
this empty block
again & again i go
double, triple lost
each awful keystroke
a doppelganger
sabotage twice
meeting itself
this nauseous
elliptical process
of so little
unfolding consequence
anticipation wearing
too tight shoes
cigarettes and coffee
smirking in the background
hemingway & faulkner
offering whiskey
still the unsolved crime:
noun, verb, and adjective.

Author's Note
While I'm not particularly plagued by "writer's block" (more just writer's procrastination!), I've had to deal with it from students. The poem was inspired after a particular hand-holding with one of my fiction-writing students. The piece was published in Danse Macabre as a du jour Oct. 19, 2010.

I know this place too well
you aren't the only one with wreter's block. I think Hemmingway went thru that for a time.
