About Me

I write and make stuff. I don't eat animals. Books make me happy.

I love the Cocteau quote, "Art is not a pastime but a Priesthood."

I listen to the Daemon. I like Blake, Jung, Hillman. I love Jodorowsky films.

Why do you write?

Creative fuel: books, jazz music, walking, reading Dogen, Merton, Plotinus, reading other writers, eavesdropping in coffee houses.

Why do I write? Because as Kenneth Burke once wrote, "Stories are equipment for living."

Any favorite authors? Books?

Authors: Hermann Hesse, Ernest Hemingway, Haruki Murakami, Francine Prose, William Trevor, Mary Shelley, Nietzsche, Anton Chekhov, Italo Calvino, John Dufresne, Junot Díaz, Herman Hesse, A.M Homes, Philip K. Dick, Kurt Vonnegut, Neil Gaiman, Jim Butcher, Colson Whitehead, lots of others.

Books: All of them.

Coe, thanks for the fave and the comment on "Look in the empty mirror ... tell me what you see" and "Dr. D. T. Suzuki and Thomas Merton share an orange in the shade of a willow." Be careful with Zen. Unless taken in moderation, that stuff will make a guy perpetually cheery and annoyingly optimistic.
