coughs and sprays of spittle

 like someone with sniffles--

 only occasionally fatal

 

Blaming climate for weather

like blaming cattle for leather

birds for a feather

horses for their tether

Whoever said phylogeny

 recapitulates ontogony

 probably meant ontology

 misconstrues allegory
