I am an award-winning writer, teacher, published poet and former director of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference.
I've written two books: Navigating the Rough Waters of Today's Publishing World, Critical Advice for Writers from Industry Insiders (Quill Driver Books, 2010) and Santa Barbara, Paradise on the Pacific, a coffee table book published in 1996 by Longstreet Press in Atlanta.
I have freelanced or written for numerous publications, including the Los Angeles Times, The Writer magazine and Santa Barbara Magazine. I'm a contributing writer to Miller-McCune Magazine online and an occasional blogger with The Huffington Post.
I worked for newspapers for almost 20 years before leaving to freelance and raise my daughter. Today I am in a master of fine arts in creative writing program (at Antioch University, Los Angeles), and am at work on a memoir and a novel.
I'm a member of the Author's Guild and Pen USA. I love to take photographs, walk on the beach with my dogs, write poetry and read good fiction.
JRR Tolkien, John Steinbeck, Mary Oliver, Tom Robbins, Sylvia Plath, Mary Karr, Joan Didion, Christopher Moore, Shakespeare, Thoreau...to name just a few. Favorite books include Of Mice and Men, Tolkien's Trilogy, Even Cowboys Get the Blues, The Liars' Club, The Life of Pi, and more recently, Patty Smith's Just Kids.
