About Me

I'm a fiction writer who likes to mix it up occasionally with a little poetry and nonfiction.

My latest story, "Or Best Offer," was a finalist for the Rick DeMarinis Short Story Award and was published in Arroyo Literary Review in Spring, 2013. An earlier piece, "Wings Raised Up," won the Alligator Juniper National Fiction Award and a 2012 Pushcart Prize nomination. My stories, poems, and essays have appeared in over a dozen literary journals, most recently Midway Journal, Fiction365, and Farallon Review. During my MFA program at University of San Francisco, I was nominated for Best New American Voices (Mariner Books).

I teach writing at UC Berkeley, something I often (but not always!) love --

Why do you write?

Writing is my way of making sense of what doesn't, and perhaps never will.

Any favorite authors? Books?

An unlikely crew: Raymond Carver, Anton Chekhov, Junot Diaz, Louise Erdrich, Ernest Hemingway, Alice Munro, Flannery O'Connor, Grace Paley, Tobias Wolff, & Virgina Woolf.

Houskeeping by Marilynne Robinson is one of my all time favorite novels. If you haven't read it, you must!
