I write fiction, usually short stories. I have been known to work on the occasional movie script for fun. Right now I am writing a novel that will serve as my creative thesis for the graduate writing program I am currently enrolled in.
Good storytelling, plain and simple. Doesn't matter what form it comes in: novels, short stories, movies, poems, songs, paintings, whatever. If I am experiencing a good story, the first thing I am going to want to do the moment it's over is sit down and work on my own stories.
Too many, but I'll list a few:
Megan Mayhew Bergman, Mikhail Bulgakov, Raymond Carver, E. Hemingway, Nathan Englander, Dave Eggers, F. Fitzgerald, Neil Gaiman, Frank O' Hara, James Joyce, Thomas Pynchon, John Dos Passos, David Foster Wallace, and Thomas Pynchon.
Some of my favorite books? Sure:
Blood Meridian, The Crying of Lot 49, Infinite Jest, The Master and Margarita, War and Peace, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, and Meditations in an Emergency.
