A Way of Life
by Michael D. Brown
Word spread among the villagers. Nothing more savory than gossip relayed in confidential tones. Those responsible would be stoned. Village life could not proceed in its fashion lest an example be set. Fair trials had dispelled the witches and their sorcery long ago. Justice had routed disrespectful intruders. A way of life was at stake.
Tightly written, with the airless logic of fanaticism, and the so defensive "dispelled," setting an example and routing the "disrespectful."
The closing sentence rocks my world.
