Thoughts That Wake Me Like a Bad Dream 1 through 3
by Gary Hardaway
1
The twentieth- my birth century-
may be but a nightmare premonition
of what the twenty-first —
my death century- will become.
2
The police states of German National Socialism
and the Soviet Union are but pencil studies
for the full blown canvases of the new police states
now emerging in the service of rococo capitalism.
3
There really is a jealous angry
God and I have at long last
earned His attention.
Yikes! You mean everything gets worse; nothing gets better? Isn't that one of the laws of thermodynamics? *
All three - spot on. Good piece, Gary.
Jake, I think it's the second law that tells us "things fall apart".
Thank you, Sam.
I can't imagine a worse nightmare. Shivers. ***
On the other hand, if God is jealous, you must have something positive going for you/for us. Don't lose sight of that. *
"new police states
now emerging in the service of rococo capitalism." Scares hell out of me.*
Thank you, Gloria, Beate, and Gary.
"rococo capitalism"!
Like this whole poem a lot.
*
This whole thing is pretty brilliant-and not something I'd expect you to write. You surprise me.
*
You writer types who make it look so-o easy, you types who know how to control the language and weave words into poetry -- I would hate your guts except that I want your approval even more.
*
Birth century, death century--brilliant, Gary. *
Thank you, Bill. And Amanda.
And Gita. And Foster.
Thank you all very much.
