A Hole in my Heart

by Darryl Price

I don't want your recipe for fulfilling
love. You didn't find me right next to
you. The sky is always falling. We think
it's got nothing to do with narrow minds.

I don't believe in your alchemical
calls. Just give me your generalizations
and be done with it. Your lab looks like
another smiling bank trying to sell

me baited money for dreams that block my
own sweet imagination's castle. You
didn't see me sitting right next to you.
The hole in my heart has let in both bees

and bats. Nothing remains the same. The sky
was falling yesterday. I haven't checked
with today. I don't want your campaign promises
even if they're for a good cause.

I no longer wait for you. All around
us, the sky is dropping in chunks on our
heads. You didn't notice me slip and fall
in front of you. You never do. That hole

called a heart has been sleeping like an abandoned
baby ever since. I don't want
your horses. The sky shouldn't have to pay
exorbitant taxes just to keep going.
