About Me

I'm a journalist with Dow Jones for the past 13 years. I write and edit the Market Talk column and blog for DJ Newswires, and I write for the Ahead of the Tape and Upshot columns for The Wall Street Journal. I also host the Markets Hub show on WSJ.com, and appear regularly on WSJ's News Hub and Fox Business Network.

I was an English major at Fairfield University in Connecticut (graduated 1990.) I've been writing stories since I was a little boy, it's just something I've always done, although I didn't realize I wanted to be "a writer" until I was 15, when I read The Sun Also Rises. That was the one that crystallized it for me.

Why do you write?

I don't know why I write. Maybe because I can't paint.

Any favorite authors? Books?

Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises

Thoreau, Walden

Raymond Carver, James Joyce

Thanks, Myra, glad you liked Ibby's. I'm not sure if it's a full story, or a vignette, or whatever, but I like it, too.

Welcome, Paul.

Read your bio. A Fairfield grad and Hemingway fan. I'm a Hemingway fan, too, and I'll be getting my MFA at Fairfield next year. Anything you can tell me about the area would be great. Liked your story, "Fast," as well.

Thanks. I remember reading it my sophomore year, and it was like a light went off. I just realized, oh, a writer. I want to be a writer. It just became obvious.

The Sun Also Rises was also one of the books that did it for me. Also Portrait of the Artist As a Young Man by Joyce. Welcome.
