Why do you write?

I keep writing because I keep giving up other things to come back to writing. I'm not sure that's the best reason, but it's at least an answer.

Any favorite authors? Books?

Heinrich Boell (especially _Billiards at Half Past Nine_), Bertolt Brecht, Virginia Woolf (especially _Mrs. Dalloway_), Ian Hacking, Roald Dahl, Sylvia Plath, Kurt Schwitters...but not just to harp on authors, Gerhard Richter and Jack Spencer are some of my favorite visual artists.
