Jean, I just looked at your website and I totally agree. Character drives the story, you must find/listen to/ the voice!
Conversely there is no reason why genre fiction cannot be literary character driven as well. We have an acclaimed crime writer in Australia, Peter Temple, and his stuff is very much both literary and genre based.
I'm really looking forward to reading some of your work, from what I have read, I'm sure it is like this too.
As you are saying the opening line must get you in, but its seduction rather than the big bang entry that works for me.
