Hi there,
My name's Gage and I'm really excited to be a part of the Fictionaut community.

For a year or so, I've been sitting in the back of the class, reading the excellent stories on here but never volunteering one myself... Well, it's time for a change. :)

I've always been a big reader, but I haven't had much by the way of writing classes or groups. I look forward to growing as a writer with your help, and hopefully I'll pick up a new word or two.

Why do you write?

"No one should be more surprised by a story than its writer." -- Flannery O'Connor.

That pretty much sums it up for me. Every morning I trudge over to the computer and pound away -- and what keeps me coming back are those tiny surprises. You think you know your character all the way down to the marrow inside his bone, until one day he shoots someone and you don't even know where he got the gun!

So that's why I write: They thrill me.

Short Storyists -- Annie Proulx, Junot Diaz, Denis Johnson, Amy Hempel, Flannery, William Trevor, Munro, Kafka, Saunders, Kipling, Lydia Davis, Ben Marcus, Amy Bloom, Carver, Steven Millhauser.

Novelists -- Nabokov, Vonnegut, Pynchon, McCullers, Crichton (I can't help myself), Junot Diaz, PK Dick, DFW, Don DeLillo, Charles Stross, Graham Greene, Murakami, Ondaajte, Ford, Octavia Butler.

Nonfiction (Essays, Crit, etc) -- Klosterman, DFW, Michael Lewis, Bill Simmons, Didion, Harold Bloom, Ozick, Lester Bangs.

Recently Read -- What Does Technology Want?, Letters from a Stoic, Slaughterhouse Five, The Hunger Games, Robopocalypse, Geek Love, Blood and Guts in High School.
