Cold, wet and dreary.

Cold, wet and dreary.
The three words that describe Belgium. A country that owns so little identity. Sure, there are the mussels, beer, wafels and chocolate ... But that's about as far as it goes. The lack of identity rules the country, grayness rules the horizon. And yet it's one of the countries with the highest living standards in the world. Identity however, is a word the inhabitants don't seem to know. Culture, in an area where there should be so much, doesn't see the light of day. I would say there is hope, hope for something better, hope for a future, but most people are like the climate.
Cold, wet and dreary.
Provocative! Hope they get some sun shine some day.
Thanks J., let's hope they do, I was born there ;)
HA! My father, may he rest in peace, once said, "The most boring people on earth are the Belgians." He wasn't an opinionated man, so it came as a surprise to me then. And now here you are...
Nice meditation on a country that doesn’t get a lot of press!
According to me he was right Gita :).
Thanks Christian!
Yet Belgium produced great artists (all psychologically complex/tortured, all envelope pushers) like Felician Rops, Ferdnand Khnopff, James Ensor, Leon Spilliaert, Paul Delvaux, and Rene Magritte!
Good point there Bill. You're the first I meet that even knows Spilliaert, a recommender to everyone by the way!
But after years of being on internet, I also know people don't know that stuff, they know the chocolates. A Belgian even invented the saxophone, they're twisted and weird, not often, but when they are, they're complex in a high degree, and dark.
Let's hope that tendency continues (not that people should suffer).
And thanks, glad to know someone knows about that stuff.
