I want to begin the long struggle of submitting some of my work to magazines/presses/lit mags and am looking for suggestions.
:)
THANK YOU
Purchase a subscription to Duotrope's Digest and study it.
It's all there.
Have fun.
Most of the submission guidelines suggest reading some of the stuff they've published before submitting. Seems like good advice.
John, that is fantastic advice. Besides increasing your chances of acceptance, why would you want your work to appear alongside stuff you aren't willing to read?
If you can't afford a subscription to Duotrope, do a google search for "literary journals." There are many free sites with listings of journals. Here's one I found today: http://www.thereviewreview.net/magazines.
Good luck!
Emerging Writers Network blog has a comprehensive list too.
This article on LitReactor had some pretty good lists, too:

I'll second that article Sam posted above me. Don't bother with Duotrope. Everything in that article is everything you'll find on Duotrope and you won't have to pay for it. Just Google each publication to find their respective websites and submission guidelines.
"do a google search for 'literary journals.'"
funny.

Duotrope offers a heck of a lot more than submission guidelines. I agree that it's not a necessity, but to say that you can get everything Duotrope has to offer through a Google search is rather uninformed.
