I grew up in the Rocky Mountains of rural, south-central Idaho. The wilderness (both physical and metaphorical) exists as a character in my life and in my craft. After some time in Washington state, I moved back to the small town of Hailey, Idaho, where I currently live, write, and teach with my wife and children.
The strange and the dissonant seem to keep my attention and infect my stories. I write to let my mind wander, to let my imagination have its time. I write to process the weirdness of life and its charms. I write to change my mind. I write for the "us" of which I am a part - to disable separation.
Cormac McCarthy (The Road, Blood Meridian), Steven Almond (Not That You Asked), Mary Karr (The Liars' Club), David Foster Wallace (A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again), Rick Moody (Ice Storm, Demonology), Anthony Doerr (Shell Collector, Memory Wall), Annie Dillard (Teaching a Stone to Talk), E. B. White (essays), C. S. Lewis (essays and Chronicles of Narnia), Tobias Wolff (This Boy's Life, short stories).
