About Me

As a boy, I spent my allowance on all sorts of pens and paper, so there was never much question that I would become a writer. I received my B.A. from Grinnell College in English and my M.A. in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. I have published in such journals as The Southwest Review, Poets & Writers, The Rumpus, Gargoyle, and The Berkeley Fiction Review, among others. I'm the founder and editor of the lit journal 100 Word Story, and I write essays and book reviews for a number of publications and blogs. I recently became executive director of the Office of Letters and Light, which puts on National Novel Writing Month, the Young Writers Program, Script Frenzy, and Camp NaNoWriMo.

Why do you write?

To connect. To confess. To create.

Any favorite authors? Books?

Denis Johnson, Robert Stone, Lydia Davis, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Paul Bowles, James Salter, Natalie Serraut, Dean Young, Marilyn Robinson, J.M.G. LeClezio, T.S. Eliot, Graham Greene, and many that I've now forgotten...
