About Me

I write poems, short fiction, and stage plays. I teach at Converse College, in Spartanburg SC, and I've been active in state and local democratic politics. My wife and I live in Greer SC. We have two adult children. I retired from "government work" several years ago, then went back to university for an MFA to get the tickets to teach at the university level. I worked for those national agencies who have no recognizable name. I'm a recovering "conservative."

Why do you write?

Why do I write? Ever since discovering James Wright, Donald Justice, and Stephen Dunn, in college, I've realized that writing is what I must do. Have to... My writing for the stage comes from many years as an actor, in NY and VA. Just doing what comes naturally!

Any favorite authors? Books?

James Wright is my favorite poet, among many. I enjoy historical fiction, and C .J. Sansom is currently at the top of that genre. Killer Angels is the book that left the most lasting impression on me. The one book I return to more than any other? A Movable Feast, by Hemingway. I have read everything by Bellow. He is my all-time favorite American fiction writer.

Thank you for your kind words on "Atonement" -- and welcome! I'm also swamped now, end of the semester woes, but look forward to reading your work as soon as I catch my breath!

Once again, Thank you all. I'm a bit swamped with end of semester detail. I must heave to and read more of what you people have written. Thanks for reading my "Fifty Bucks... piece. I actually do more with poetry than fiction, and stage plays and theatre work take a lot of time. I'm keen to get into the flow with you all. Pax, Arthur
