  • About Me

BREAKING NEWS. . . My book Collateral Damage received the Bronze Medal for Literary Fiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards! Totally thrilled. Hope to get to the award ceremony in NYC later this month.

My stories have appeared in journals such as Amarillo Bay, America West, Mississippi Review, Paterson Literary Review, Beloit Fiction Journal, Enterzone, Storyglossia, Upstairs at Duroc, and Stone Canoe. In 2006, my book Leaving Vietnam was a finalist for the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. Formerly a resident of San Francisco, I have lived in Paris since 2004.

When I was growing up I wanted to be a ballet dancer, a Mouseketeer, a folksinger, an actress, and a writer. Only writing stuck, partly because writing requires no auditions, no permissions, no stage or lighting, no other participants. Not even a computer, although that's hard to imagine nowadays. But really. A pencil and a piece of paper will do. If you think about it, the creative freedom we have is limitless.

January 2011: The new issue of Stone Canoe, with my story "A Burning House" came out yesterday.

March 2011: And now for something different. . . my story "The Purple Bowl" will appear in Vitruvius, the first arts journal to be published in Second Life. It will also be available on the web.

August 2011: In 2012, my first book will be published by Standing Stone Books. I'm actually having trouble writing these words down.

October 2011: One of my favorite stories, "And the Part of Me Will Be Played by Marilyn Monroe", has been accepted for publication in Amarillo Bay. It will be out in February. I am very excited, but also feel a little pang at "letting this story go". I have tinkered with it and read it so many times. Once they're published, I don't read them very often.

July 2012: My first book, Collateral Damage, will be published this month. I will be giving readings in Cazenovia and Fayetteville, NY; Portsmouth, NH; and Cambridge, MA.

September 2012: BESTSELLER! COLLATERAL DAMAGE MADE SMALL PRESS DISTRIBUTION'S JULY/AUGUST BESTSELLER LIST!

February 2013: Launched a website for my book: www.collateraldamage.us. The site has links to my Facebook and Twitter pages -- and my new blog

April 2013: Next month I'll be "in residence" at the American School of Paris, giving a reading (to 300 people!) and 6 short workshops. The school bought 100 copies of my book for the 10th graders to read. They are studying Vietnam in their history class and also read Tim O'Brien'sThe Things They Carried. I'm in good company!

Paris Book Launch: My Paris book launch will be at Shakespeare & Co. on 13 June 2013 at 7 pm. Hope you can come!
