Shutter
Bring your eye to the lens
your ear to the ground
look beyond the fence
listen to the pulses
images to be found
the earth at your feet.
Picture
the color of the wind
the radiance of the sun
filtered light
through foliage
everlasting ephemeral
moment.
Generations gather
to hear stories
camera shutters visions
photographic treasure
focused, on youth
community
nature
grounded
memories preserved.
Remember children
skipping sidewalk
jumping puddles
larger than lakes
throwing stones
creating ripples
captured
with a click.
Background
foreground
life in the middle
give it time
for time will tell
your story.

This summer I volunteered with 8th grade Latino students for a project called Photo Voice. My job was to help the kids see beyond their photos and tell the story with words. They had several exhibits at Libraries and other schools. The poem is about that experience.

That this is strongly visual and sounds/feels like a song gives it a really pure energy. I read this in the magazine where it's published, congrats!
