The new year begins

by Martha Rand

The new year begins with illness and loss.
Empty connections reaching across.
Adults make decisions
    exposed to derision.
Irrationality opens to force.

An internal drive
   interstices, indecision,
A girl on a bus
   exposed to incision.

Female goddesses die,
martyred young women lie
   in hospital beds,
   alone in their heads,
all with the cast of an eye.
