As an assignment for myself, I took a song that I thought had an interesting story -- "I Kissed A Girl" by Katy Perry -- and spun it around, taking it from the perspective of the girl she kissed.
I'm glad I get to write the very first comment.
About fifteen minutes ago my nose was buried in a book called "Indian Philosophy an Introduction to Hindu and Buddhist Thought," which I'm not sure how relevant it is to this story or even you, but for some strange reason page 78 made me think of your writing, your story that I read a while back. You've got this incredible ability with your writing, no joke. Here, this story, which I liked very much, is most enjoyable to an audience composed of people like myself- people who know who T-Pain is. Now this is a comment so I'll finish up quickly, but the talent that you have to describe--create a whole fucking world is remarkable. One of four authors I've ever read. I dare, dare, dare you to write something for the masses, something that you feel is written for a perfectly balanced, universal audience as if it were translated into I don't know Hindi. Yeah, Hindi. Someone who only speaks Hindi and has never ever watched a television or even read a newspaper however still knows how to read. I guess what I'm saying is if you picked the most general, boring-as-hell universally understood topic (a chair for example) I'd bet you could make that shit fucking sparkle like no one else.
Wow.
Really, wow, thank you, Jason.
I've been waffling back and forth, as I've heard some feedback throughout the years that I overdescribe. I never got it, especially since in my experience all too often writers in workshops I attended could see the scene perfectly even though they didn't fully describe it to me.
It's so funny, as your note is exactly my goal -- if someone wholly alien to US culture could grasp English, that they'd be able to understand what I'm doing (if they had the barest of reference materials). The idea that my stuff could actually translate is even more mind blowing.
I consider this truly high praise, and I appreciate your comment so much!
