I was right to fear the God of my father
He is a monster.
Divulging promises of eternal torture
and certain desertion
in the ears
of children
just
trying
to sleep.
Dispensing punishments reserved for Christ
mockery and flogging
on the backs
of children
just
trying
to grow.

The central focus here - the twin pillars of trying to sleep and trying to grow - are haunting. Very effective and moving. The desertion in the ears and the flogging on the backs elicit the reader's compassion. An impactful piece. *

There is so much to say on this topic. We've got to stop passing down impossible standards, especially to children who are only given nightmares by them. Thank you for writing this. You are brave. And kind. And those two things are the things that should be passed on to the next generation. Kindness and courage.
