Just in case anyone's had the same problem: getting an error message when I hit "Preview..." and no luck getting past it to publish the piece.
I e-mailed Carson and would suggest doing the same if you've had this issue.
Is the front page what you are referring to? If so, you have a story there already. Only one story per account is allowed at any one time. I believe this limit was intended to prevent people from overrunning the front page with their work. We must either wait until enough people publish for our story to fall off the front page, at which time we can publish another, or we must delete the current story and post another in its place, which is what Darryl Price has been doing.
If this is not what you meant then please disregard these comments.
It's not what I meant, Lorenzo, since the block and error message happen before the piece reaches the stage of publishing so that the site won't even allow putting up the story as a "private," piece. I'm familiar with the front page limitation but that's not what's happening. I suspect it's affecting others, but would like to know if that's so.
Have you noticed that not one story on the front page has logged even a single view in at least the last eight or ten days? Something is clearly wrong with the site. Your initial comment suggests the problem may extend further than the front page.
I hadn't noticed that but I think you might be right that the problems are more extensive, and really need attention.
Or:
David, recall that our dearly beloved Fictionaut was established in 2008. By internet standards Fictionaut is now geriatric and has enjoyed the lengthy course that it has courtesy of the generosity of first Jurgen and more lately of Carson, to both of whom we are grateful that the site has lasted this long.
Fictionaut seems no longer to attract fresh contributors, and many if not most contributors active here a decade ago no longer post work here, and some few contributors who once posted here have shuffled off their mortal coils, as we know.
I'd be pleased if Fictionaut keeps on chugging, but unless I'm gravely mistook, the gradual loss of site functionalities (which I noted here in the Forum some time ago) suggest the site will not continue much longer.
It's been fun, it's been real fun, and I'm amazed the site has functioned so well for so long: Carson has patiently kept us going apparently, but he may well have other things to tend to by now.
Thank you, Jurgen, thank you, Carson. Long live Fictionaut!
I wonder if stories will be archived?
Edward and Dianne,
If what you say is true, Edward, I agree with all you say: it's been fun, rewarding, and given a jumpstart to my work that I would probably not have had without Fictionaut. That's in addition to providing readers, both on and off the site, who I likely never would have had.
I do think it would be fairer to those of us who have stuck with it to openly say that Fictionaut is winding down, thus giving us a chance to retrieve and store work that--at least in my case--has been archived on Fictionaut. But whatever, I'd add my gratitude to yours to both Jurgen and Carson for giving us this home, temporary, as all homes ultimately are, but welcoming, open to the light, and a hell of a lot of fun.

Well, it's a start, or restart since James Claffey just successfully posted a piece. Counters still not working though.
Yes, counters not counting. I couldn't figure out a work-around to posting a fresh story, but I had a couple of recent drafts already uploaded, so the error didn't happen when I hit "publish." Trying to generate a new post didn't work. It'll be a shame when/if the site goes to the internet graveyard, as it's been a part of my writing life for many years, even though I'm less prolific of late.
I think it's important not to jump to conclusions. All sites are finicky, to a certain extent. I'm an artist outside of the literary work I do. Many sites I use to sell or market my art go down for periods of time.
