In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said: "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter--bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."
--Stephen Crane
Stephen Crane--underrated poet.
Whoa!
Because it is bitter
And because it is my heart.
My husband does not care too much for fiction (whoa!) but I believe he has every volume of Stephen Crane's ever written. Which redeems him, I think ;^)
Thanks Matt. peace...
I'd like to see an animation of this. Lots of red and black, I imagine...
Whew! Very interesting and I liked it.
The lack of punctuation after:
"But I like it"
gives me FITS!
I bet he spent hours going over his commas. Or maybe not.
(I bet he did.)
Matt, you should make an animation of this poem. There are a couple of truly awful ones on youtube.
Going to google "free foolproof poem animator download" now.
