About Me

I am a mother of three, poet, and writer.

Why do you write?

Other authors can fuel my creativity and I am a word junkie. I love strange and antiquated words. Oxford is a great place for finding them. Music does too, particularly the blues, rap, jazz and funk. And then of course I am very political so that feeds into my work.

Any favorite authors? Books?

I would say Oscar Wilde, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Yukio Mishima, Celine, Primo Levi, Sylvia Plath, Simone Weil, Marquez, Graham Greene, Shakespeare, Yeats, Tolstoy, too many to list really. When I studied the canon at Harvard, Virginia Woolf was the only woman on the list. She's also a favourite, as Emily Dickinson, Hawthorne, and Wordsworth. I guess I am old school.

thank you for the comment on "<a href="http://www.fictionaut.com/stories/marcus-speh/the-serious-writer-occupies-wall-street">The Serious Writer Occupies Wall Street</a>"; for me the painting reflects a world of ambivalence that is probably felt all over the place towards "occupy".
