  • About Me

I'm the author of two books: That Demon Life, a novel, and Long Time Ago Good, a story collection. My work has been published in two dozen or so journals, including Callaloo, Iron Horse Literary Review, and Short Story, and I'm a former winner of the Dobie-Paisano Fellowship, awarded by the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Institute of Letters. I lived in Austin, Texas, for 25 years, at various times making my living working as a cab driver, as a shade tree salesman, and as an Internal Revenue Service bureaucrat. I'm currently Artist-in-Residence at Federal Prison Camp Bryan, and I'm also a Post-Doctoral Lecturer at Texas A&M University, where I teach literature, creative writing, and freshman composition

    Why do you write?

Right now there are some cheerful drunk people across the alley from my window grilling meat. Why are they laughing?

There are many mysteries in this life....

    Any favorite authors? Books?

    War & Peace--Tolstoy
    The Sun Also Rises--Hemingway
    A Confederacy of Dunces--Toole
    Now Playing at Canterbury--Bourjaily
