Yes, I work in Marketing, but I was an engineer for sixteen years before that. I've written three engineering books and a few hundred thousand words of technical articles - see my writing page for some links.
Right now, I'm working busily on both my first novel, and my autobiography - with my goal, like everyone else's, ultimately to live by writing. My reason for being interested in Fictionaut is practice, and eyeballs, for a type of writing I haven't much explored for quite some years.
Sci-fi and horror are my preferred genres.
I write for many different reasons. I explored some of them in this blog post (NSFW, ish): http://larwe.com/blog/larwe.php/2012/03/20/introduction-to-my-autobiography
My favorite authors that spring immediately to mind are Verne, Wells, Dickens, Arthur C. Clarke, Asimov, Clive Barker, James Herbert. In lighter moods, James Herriot and Gerald Durrell :)
I used to like Stephen King and Dean Koontz but no longer find their work very thrilling.
